Basic Data:

Description

The COI seismic station, situated in Coimbra, Portugal, holds the distinction of being the oldest seismic station in mainland Portugal and one of the world's most ancient. It commenced continuous recording in 1903 using a Milne horizontal seismograph. Today, seismic recording continues at this historic site with a broadband Streckeisen STS-2 seismometer, which has been in use since 2007; for further historical information see: Custódio et al. 2012, doi: 10.1785/0220120014

Description

The underground shelter of the current COI seismic station was built in the early 1970s. It was excavated on a slight slope, cutting into the Triassic red sandstone bedrock.
