You can rent a car at Schiphol.
-
For more information on car hire, see the website
of Schiphol.
-
The price is in the order of EUR 40,- for one day,
and so it is probably the cheapest transport if
you share the car with 3 or more.
-
Route:
Exit Schiphol on the A4 direction Amsterdam,
immediately turn to the A9 to Amstelveen,
then turn right to the A2 direction Utrecht.
Take exit "Maarssen",

(here you enter the
routemap
from the top).
Follow directions to "Uithof/De Bilt"

Go towards "De Bilt", but turn left
100 meters before the traffic lights, see

Utrecht CS to KNMI
You can travel by bus from Utrecht Central Station to KNMI.
-
The problem is that there are 4 lines, and it is not trivial
to find out which bus will depart first. (The one with a
driver inside is probably the best choice.)
- Please click on the bus numbers below if you want to see the complete time-tables (in pdf).
-
The last bus departs at 01:04 hr to De Bilt.
-
The traveling time is about 13 minutes;
a slight delay during the rush-hours is possible
because of ongoing roadworks.
-
Please follow
the direction "streekbussen" (regional buses) at Utrecht CS,
see
map of Utrecht CS.
The bus stops are downstairs.
-
Get off at bus-stop "Tunneltje De Bilt".
Ask the driver to notify you when you arrive.
(After leaving Utrecht, you will cross under the highway (A27),
then pass a car-dealer on your right, and a park on your left.
Now it is time to press the "stop" button.)
-
Walk to KNMI:
cross the small bridge on your right and turn right.
Follow the Emmalaan (it curves to the left) until it crosses the
Wilhelminalaan at the KNMI entrance. See the
map of De Bilt.
-
Bus-ticket: you can pay in the bus (EUR 2,40).
When you travel with two or more together it is cheaper
to buy a "strippenkaart" with 15 strips in advance
(price = EUR 6,50).
The strippenkaart can be bought together with your
rail-ticket at Schiphol or at the bus-station in Utrecht.
The bus to De Bilt takes 3 strips.
(So one strippenkaart will take two persons to KNMI,
and back to Utrecht CS.)
You can also take a TAXI (UTC). You will find them
on the platform 1 side of the railway station.
The price is in the order of EUR 15,-.
You can rent a bike at Utrecht CS.
Bikes can be rented at the bike-garage
under platforms 1&2.
De Bilt is 5 km east of Utrecht.
The cost is EUR 5,20 rent and +/- EUR 50,- deposit.
