ORFEUS-NERIES Workshop

"Installation and operation of broadband seismograph stations"

October 7-10, 2007, Vienna, Austria

This workshop will provide a short concise introduction to the effective installation, operating, maintaining and Quality control of broadband seismograph stations. The expected audience are seismologists, station operators and interested geophysical students involved in, or soon to be involved in, deployment of broadband seismograph stations. ORFEUS has been organising these three day workshops on a regular basis. At this workshop we will give priority to attendants involved in deploying broadband seismic stations (for passive experiments). Consequently, presentations will be given by PASSCAL (IRIS), SEIS-UK (NERC), GFZ, ORFEUS and others. Among the lectures (preliminairy titles) are:

  • Erhard Wielandt; an introduction to seismometry and efficient calibration
  • ORFEUS (Reinoud Sleeman); SEED formatting and Quality Control
  • Richard Boaz; Introduction to the open source Quality Control software PQLX
  • Marcos Alvarez; PASSCAL deployment practises and strategies
  • Alex Brisbourne; SEIS-UK seismic facility practices and experiences
  • Peter Melichar; The Conrad Facility and HQ station installation considerations
  • GFZ; Practise and experience of the GFZ mobile pool

Specific attention will be paid to archiving and Quality Control issues to encourage long-term sustainability of data gathered in temporary deployments. The workshop will contain as much as possible on-hands practises and intensive interaction with experienced professional. A visit to the Conrad facilities is included in the program. Last but not least, an insight in the relevant developments within the EC-project NERIES will be given.

Users are encouraged to bring their own laptops for use at the workshop. Also, if available users can bring data and response files for use with PQLX (SEED format if available).
